Surface dyslexia is a specific type of reading difficulty characterized by challenges in recognizing words by sight, especially irregularly spelled words. Individuals with surface dyslexia often rely heavily on phonetic decoding, which can lead to struggles when encountering words that do not follow typical phonetic rules, such as “yacht” or “colonel.” This condition can result in slow and laborious reading, as individuals may sound out each letter rather than recognizing whole words. While surface dyslexia can impact reading fluency and comprehension, targeted interventions, including phonics-based instruction and practice with sight words, can help improve reading skills and overall literacy.
Confusion with letters that differ in orientation (b-d, p-q)
Confusion with letters that differ in orientation, such as 'b' and 'd' or 'p' and 'q,' is a common challenge for many individuals,... particularly those with dyslexia. Dyslexia has is a learning difference that affects reading, writing, and spelling, and often leads to difficulties in distinguishing between similarly shaped letters. This confusion can hinder literacy development and contribute to frustration in learning environments. Effective interventions, such as multisensory teaching approaches and specialized reading programs, can help individuals with dyslexia develop stronger letter recognition skills and improve their overall reading abilities. Understanding and patience from educators and caregivers play a crucial role in supporting those affected by this confusion.
Losing one's place
Losing one’s place while reading is a common challenge for individuals with dyslexia, a learning difference that affects reading fluency and comprehension.... This difficulty often arises from the visual and cognitive processing challenges associated with dyslexia, making it hard to track lines of text or maintain focus on specific words. As a result, readers may frequently lose their place, skip lines, or reread sections, which can lead to frustration and decreased confidence in their reading abilities. To support individuals facing this issue, techniques such as using a ruler or finger to guide their reading, or employing colored overlays can be beneficial . These strategies can help improve reading accuracy and ease the cognitive load, allowing for a more positive reading experience.
Omitting letters and words because they weren't visually noted
Omitting letters and words during reading or writing is a common characteristic of dyslexia, a learning difference that affects the ability to process written language.... Individuals with dyslexia may struggle to visually note every letter or word, leading to skipped or missed elements in sentences. This can occur because their brains may not efficiently translate visual input into accurate reading and writing, causing frustration and confusion. As a result, texts may appear incomplete or jumbled, impacting comprehension and overall literacy. To address this challenge, strategies such as using guided reading techniques and providing structured practice can help individuals develop more accurate and confident reading and writing skills.
Difficulty recalling the shape of a letter when writing
Individuals with dyslexia often experience difficulty recalling the shape of letters when writing,... a challenge that can hinder their ability to express thoughts clearly on paper. This issue may stem from a combination of visual processing difficulties and working memory challenges, making it hard for them to retrieve the correct letter forms during writing tasks. As a result, they might reverse letters, substitute similar-looking characters, or leave out letters altogether, which can lead to frustration and a lack of confidence in their writing abilities. To support these individuals, multisensory approaches—such as using tactile materials, visual aids, and consistent practice—can help reinforce letter recognition and improve handwriting skills, allowing for more effective communication.

For the past 1 1/2 years Deborah has worked with my 13-year-old twin boys who have both been diagnosed with dyslexia. After seeing the boys' struggles only get worse the older they became we decided we needed something beyond what the school had to offer. I began researching different programs that have been deemed helpful with students with dyslexia. The basket that my husband and I decided to put all our eggs in was the program Deborah had to offer. You could not have told me the results we were about to experience. When starting this program we were simply looking to improve the boys' reading skills. In the short span of 18 months not only has she surpassed what we were hoping for with reading but the skills she has taught them have spilled over into other subjects. Deborah has 100% helped my boys academically but more importantly she has given them lifelong skills that have ultimately given them the confidence to be successful going forward. There aren’t words to express how appreciative we are for the positive impact Deborah has had on the boys, we will be forever thankful.
We started tutoring with Ms Deborah right after my son's dyslexia diagnosis. He was very frustrated with reading and low confidence in school. After 1.5 years with her Cowen is a different student. She is an advocate for him and his confidence soars so much that he has become an advocate for other students in school struggling with reading and dyslexia. We cannot thank Deborah enough for turning his journey into something so positive!
I have worked with Deborah as a coworker and a client. I’ve personally seen her in the classroom and the results of her private tutoring for both of my sons who are dyslexic. Deb is an incredibly patient and engaging teacher. The kids she works with get the benefit of her excellent teaching as well as her genuine care for each student. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for a dyslexic specialist or general tutor.
